Moments earlier, Chouhan had been handed a bunch of petitions from people thronging his ‘chariot’. By then, there was a sackful of petitions. By day’s end, three sacks full.

Chouhan’s wife, Sadhana Singh, collected the petitions from a rear-seat window, while the CM sat in his favourite seat next to the door, accepting showers of petals, garlands and petitions.

The CM’s staff have made special arrangements to sort out grievances of people. “We have 25 workstations set up at the CM’s residence in Bhopal to scan petitions and sort them department-wise. Five officials oversee this 24x7,” said Rakesh Gupta, OSD to Chouhan.

Chouhan insists that every single petition must be addressed. “They come in all shapes and sizes. Some send it on their letterheads, some on plain paper, some scribble it on pieces of paper and drop it inside,” Sadhana Singh said, handing over a fresh bunch pushed at her through a window. Each one will be looked into, she assured.

The petitions are sent to government departments concerned, accompanied by a special note from the CM. Resolution of complaints is closely monitored.
