Local food, homestays for tourists in Maheshwar soon
Indore: Local community run restaurants, cafeterias and homestays to come up in Maheshwar as Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) plans to develop Khariya and Keriakhedi villages in the town in the second phase of ‘Textile Tourism’ project. The board has submitted a proposal to Development Commissioner Handlooms for developing “Textile Tourism” in Maheshwar. Khariya and Keriakhedi villages are home to close to 146 weavers.Aiming to increase footfall of tourists in regions rich in traditional art and craft, the board has taken up a project to develop the areas for attracting tourists and giving a platform to local artisans. As part of the project, the board plans to develop a cafeteria, traditionally designed homestays and restaurants run by the local community.Madhya Pradesh tourism principal secretary Sheo Shekhar Shukla said, “It’s an initiative to showcase the art and craft of the state to the world. These villages have a rich history of weavers and development of this region will help in attracting tourists. Tourists would be able to interact with weavers, get to see the way they work on looms and enjoy local delicacies.”The board plans to put signage at important junctions to guide tourists to weavers villages — Khariya and Keriakhedi. It has also planned to develop Uchehara in Satna district and Bagh in Dhar district. It has sent a proposal to handicrafts development commissioner for developing these villages.The board has already started development work at Pranpur village in Chanderi tehsil of Ashoknagar district in Madhya Pradesh for developing ‘Craft Handloom Tourism Village’. The board has received a grant of around Rs 7.45 crore from handlooms development commissioner under ministry of textiles.
