Indore reports 2,500 deaths in road accidents in last 5 years

Indore: In the last five years (2021 -2025), the urban and rural areas of Indore recorded around 2,500 fatalities in road accidents, prompting authorities to implement corrective measures including removing of ‘black spots'.Data presented during a recent high-level road safety committee meeting highlighted a significant gap in the urban and rural road safety.In urban sector, the total number of accidents saw an increase from 2,618 in 2021 to a peak of 3,566 in 2023, before dropping to 3,502 in 2025. The fatalities, however, remained high, with 290 deaths recorded in 2024 alone.Data for early 2026 (Jan-March) shows 933 accidents in urban areas with 64 deaths.Rural Indore reported a sharper increase in fatalities over the same period. The deaths in accidents jumped from 155 in 2021 to a staggering 349 in 2025, even though the total number of reported accidents (1,434 in 2025) was lower than in urban sector.The accidents in rural areas were morelikely due to higher speeds on highways and delayed access to medical care.The administration has identified several critical ‘black spots'—locations with high accident frequencies—like Luv Kush Square, Dewas Naka Square, and various stretches of AB Road and Bypass.
