INDORE: Taking its clean air initiative a step forward,

Indore Municipal Corporation

(IMC) is now planning to replace its diesel-run vehicles engaged in door-to-door garbage collection and transportation work with

new CNG

vehicles.

The civic body has planned to replace a fleet of around 25 old garbage collection vehicles with new vehicles that would run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

Bio-CNG

that would be generated from processing of wet waste at a mega 550TPD bio-methanation plant being set up at Devguradia trenching ground will be used in these vehicles.

Officials said: CNG vehicles will come with a 3x3 cubic metre compartment with six bin set-up for separate collection of waste from households.

"Daily requirement of CNG in each vehicle would be around four to five kilogram. We want to reduce fuel cost by gradually replacing all old diesel-run garbage collection vehicles with new CNG ones," IMC official Manish Pandey told TOI.

"We are in the tender process for procurement of around 25 new CNG vehicles in the first phase. The average daily run of a garbage collection vehicle is around 60 km and it consumes about five litres diesel. Use of CNG vehicles will reduce the fuel cost incurred by IMC by at least 10 per cent in each vehicles since the bio-CNG produced at bio-methanation plant would cost about Rs5/kg less than the market price," he said.

IMC has also started the process for auction of 130 old and discarded vehicles.

A committee has been formed for verification and auction of discarded vehicles and the revenue generated out of the same will be used for procurement of new vehicles. The list includes around 70 old garbage collection vehicles including dumpers and trucks.
