Hit-and-run cases in Indore; 85 lives lost in 3 years

Indore: Eighty-five people were killed and 104 seriously injured in 189 hit-and-run accidents reported across Indore in the last three years.As per Indore police data released during recent Indore Road Safety Committee meeting, the fatality count has seen a significant rise in last three years. In 2023, five deaths were reported, which surged to 42 in 2024 and 38 in 2025. Out of the 85 deceased, identities of five persons could not be established."Following accidents, we launch searches to identify the accused, but we often face lack of CCTV footage at the spot, missing eyewitnesses, or injured victims unable to provide details," Additional Commissioner of Police (headquarters and crime) RK Singh told TOI.If a vehicle is not traced within 30 days, the police coordinate with the respective Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to identify eligible relatives for compensation.He said that the victims were eligible for relief under the hit and run motor accidents scheme, 2022. The scheme, effective since April 1, 2022, provides Rs 2 lakh for the legal representatives of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured victims. These payments are disbursed from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund when the vehicle involved cannot be identified."Our priority is twofold: we continue our pursuit of the accused while simultaneously assisting the victims' families in securing their rightful compensation," Singh said.
