High spirits, high risk: MP sees spike in accidents on New Year
Indore: New Year celebrations turned hectic for emergency responders across Madhya Pradesh, with 108 ambulance services handling a surge in road accidents and trauma cases within just 24 hours. Data from the state-run 108 emergency service shows that between noon and midnight on December 31, as many as 319 major road traffic accident cases were reported across various districts. During the same period, 83 calls were linked to assaults, attacks and other trauma-related incidents, reflecting the risks that come with late-night celebrations and heavy festive movement.
Accident-related emergencies were highest in districts such as Indore, Bhopal, Sagar, Raisen and Khandwa. Indore reported 14 accident cases between noon and midnight on New Year's Eve, followed by eight more cases between midnight and noon on January 1. Bhopal logged 14 cases during the night and nine more the next morning. Sagar reported 19 accident cases, while Chhindwara recorded 12. Several smaller districts also saw multiple emergencies, pointing to widespread risky driving and travel during the festivities. Overall, road traffic accidents dominated emergency calls, accounting for 422 cases across New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Assault and trauma incidents followed with 186 cases. Officials noted that the volume of emergencies was significantly higher on New Year's Eve, driven by late-night travel, parties and increased vehicular movement. However, calls dipped on New Year's Day morning as celebrations wound down and traffic reduced. Emergency officials reiterated the need for responsible driving and safer celebrations to prevent avoidable injuries during festive periods. "In emergency situations, time is of the essence. A timely response can mean the difference between life and death. Ambulances are not just vehicles; they are mobile medical units equipped with life-saving tools and staffed by trained professionals skilled in providing pre-hospital care. They can administer first aid, monitor vital signs, and stabilise the patient during transit, which is crucial for individuals suffering from conditions like cardiac arrest, severe trauma, or strokes," said Tarun Singh, senior manager, Madhya Pradesh, 108 Ambulance Service.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Happy New Year wishes, messages, and quotes !
