INDORE: A farmer attempted suicide by consuming poison in a bank in Mandsaur district on Saturday after money was not credited to his account against a cheque deposited by him nine days ago.
The incident took place in the morning in Narayangarh town of the district when one Radheshyam Prajapati, 45, consumed poisonous substance at a branch of Central Bank of India, Narayangarh police said.
Panic spread in the branch as the farmer created a ruckus over his money and consumed poison in full public view. He was immediately rushed to a primary health centre and later referred to the district hospital in Mandsaur.
Police claim that his condition was out of danger.
Radheshyam told the police that he had deposited a cheque of Rs 25,141 in his account on December 8. The cheque was received by him against sale of his soybean crop.
On Saturday, he was told by the bankers that the cheque was sent to the main branch for clearing. Infuriated, he took the dire step in front of the bank manager.
The bank manager told the police that usually the cheques are cleared in 2-3 days. But, with demonetisation, the number of cheques deposited has considerable increased. This had led to the delay in cheque clearance.
