Crop loss drives farmer to suicide in MP

Indore: Distressed by crop loss, a 48-year-old tribal farmer died by suicide in MP’s Khandwa district on Thursday.The victim, Pandhri Bheel, had taken a loan of Rs 3 lakh to plough his 3-acre land and another 6 acres he had taken on contract, his son Pradeep told TOI. The family lives in Goradia village, 135km south of Indore.“My father didn’t return home on the night of September 20. The next morning some women found his body hanging from a tree near our house,” he said.Police recovered his body and sent it for autopsy. “He was under stress as heavy rain had destroyed our crop,” said Pradeep, adding that he was also anxious about arranging money for the marriage of his three daughters, all of whom are adults.“Preliminary findings suggest he was under pressure following the destruction of his crops due to rain. He had taken a loan and needed to repay it,” said investigation officer Rajendra Singh Rathore. Police are yet to take down the statements of his family. tnn

Farmers to get central aid for crops damaged due to rain

The agricultural department in Jaipur has requested insurance companies to assess the damage caused by recent rainfall in order to provide compensation to farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana scheme. Farmers have been asked to report crop damage within 72 hours. The agriculture minister has highlighted the potential damage to Kharif crops due to untimely rains and stated that insurance cover is available for crops spoiled within 14 days of harvesting. The agriculture commissioner has instructed officials and insurance companies to begin surveying crop damage immediately.
