Mhow: Birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Tantya Bhil was celebrated at his memorial near Patalpani waterfall, about 10 km from Mhow town in Indore district on Saturday.
People from tribal community and local residents gathered at the scenic site of Patalpani to honour the 19th-century revolutionary. Mhow MLA Usha Thakur garlanded his statue and was joined by a large crowd in offering the floral tributes. A special yagna was performed at the memorial to invoke blessings and commemorate his indomitable spirit.
On the occasion, a multispecialty health camp was organised at Patalpani, providing free medical consultation by doctors from various fields. The camp drew significant participation from nearby villages.
Tantya Bhil was born on April 4, 1842, in a village in Pandhana tehsil of Khandwa district (erstwhile Nimar). A member of the Bhil tribe, he emerged as a charismatic leader who waged guerrilla war against British colonial rule between 1878 and 1889. He was captured in 1889 and hanged on Dec 4 that year. Patalpani site, where he is believed to have been active during the freedom struggle, has since become a symbol of tribal pride.|
