Indore: Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) launched a drive for providing recycled clothes, toys and study material to children of slum settlements on Monday. The initiative was a part of ‘Basti Bemisal' campaign aimed at uplifting 29 slums in the city through cleanliness and community engagement.
The items distributed were collected during an intensive 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) collection drive. Under the city-wide movement, IMC teams went door-to-door to collect over 57,000 kg of unused household goods, including books, electronic items and sports gear.
"The material were refurbished in our 3R workshops to ensure they are in excellent condition for reuse," said IMC additional commissioner Prakhar Singh. He added that larger items like furniture would be donated to NGOs dedicated to educating children.
The drive kicked off with ‘Slum Carnival' at Shiv Nagar. Atmosphere in the area turned festive as residents decorated their doorsteps with rangolis and painting murals on alley walls. The sight of children receiving bags and toys brought a sense of joy to the community.
"This campaign not only provides essential resources to those in need but also reinforces Indore's commitment to a circular economy, proving that one person's "waste" can truly become another's gift" Singh said.
