Area under soyabean to remain unchanged this kharif season
Indore: Area under soyabean, one of the major kharif or summer sown crops of Indore region, is seen almost unchanged from the last year in Indore division.Farmers in Indore division are expected to sow soyabean on around 9.05 lakh hectare, just 1 per cent lower than last year, according to the farm department. Sowing of soyabean starts from the last week of June following monsoon rains. Farmers have started preparing farms for the kharif season crops. Bharti Kisan Sangh Indore Mahanagar president Dilip Mukati said, “If rain get delayed beyond June 25 then farmers may not opt for soyabean and this may lead to a decline in the acreage. Land preparations have started and farmers are waiting for the first few rounds of rain to start sowing from June 22 to June 25.” Soyabean, cotton, maize and pulses are the main summer sown crops of Indore division. Farmers start sowing summer crops with the arrival of rain, while sowing of some varieties of cotton and pulses starts from early June. Kharif crops in Indore division are expected to cover around 22.5 lakh hectare this season, the state farm department said. ICAR- Indian Institute of Soybean Research stressed on increasing the productivity of soyabean in Madhya Pradesh. The institute director Dr KH Singh said, “Initial analysis suggests almost stable area under soyabean in Madhya Pradesh this season. But a lot will depend on the monsoon. Madhya Pradesh has the largest area under soyabean in the country but productivity is less and measures should be taken to enhance the per hectare yield of soyabean.”
