INDORE: Taps may not run dry in Mahalaxmi Nagar, Sai Krupa, Aerodrome, Nanak Nagar, Agarbati Complex, Barfani Dham and Veena Nagar area this summer.
Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Friday started additional 90 million litres per day (MLD) of water supply from Narmada Phase III. With this, the total supply of water to the city will go up to 325.5 MLD.
Till now, the city was receiving 210 MLD of water from Narmada-Narmada Phase II (120 MLD) and Narmada Phase III (90 MLD). Remaining 25 MLD was supplied from Yeshwant Sagar and Bilawali. Seven new overhead tanks with capacity of 40 lakh litres each will be filled and the total number of overhead tanks will now go up to 53.
Originally, Narmada Phase III was designed to supply 365 MLD of water but due to shortage of water in Maheshwar Dam and delay in its completion compelled civic body to restrict supply from phase III to just 90 MLD. Civic body was trying to make additional supply of 90 MLD for the past two years but only announcements were made in this regard during the two previous budgets of IMC.
Mayor Kirshnamurari Moghe said Narmada Phase III will achieve its full capacity of 365 MLD only when Maheshwar Dam will be completed and it will be filling up to its full strength.
"Out of additional 90 MLD water supply from Narmada Phase III, 50 MLD will be supplied to gram panchayats and remaining 40 MLD will be supplied to city," said Moghe adding that this summer, Indoreans will not face any water scarcity. He said ground water level has also gone up due to development of several lakes and water recharging activities.
Mayor urged people not to waste water, and adopt rainwater harvesting methods.
