The Centre is keeping a watch after N Biren Singh government’s claim that a few Kuki militants are encouraging illegal poppy cultivation and encroachment in forest areas in hill districts

At a time when the Centre is highlighting the overall peace and development in the northeastern region – home to a myriad of ethnic insurgent groups – the Manipur government’s decision to pull out of a truce pact has raised many eyebrows.

According to the ministry of home affairs (MHA), the security situation in the frontier region has considerably improved in the past decade. Insurgency-related incidents declined by 80% in six out of the eight northeast states in 2020 compared to 2014.
