IMPHAL: Despite heavy security arrangements ahead of Independence Day, a 54-year-old man was shot in the leg by unidentified miscreants in Lilong area of Thoubal district on Sunday night.

The injured man, Mohd Abdul Latif, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital and is said to be out of danger. Following the incident, police rushed to the spot, searched 16 houses in the locality and questioned the locals though no one was arrested. The police also found an empty case of a 9mm bullet on the spot and registered a case.

Meanwhile, police and central forces recovered 24 bombs, seven weapons and eight bullets during search operations in the valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur and Thoubal in the last 24 hours.

Of the 24 explosives, five recovered in the adjoining areas of Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts were defused on the spot by a bomb disposal team of security forces, said a police statement.
