NEW DELHI: Army chief General Manoj Pande is slated to visit Manipur today in order to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the security situation in response to the recent wave of violence in the state, according to Indian Army officials.

The Army chief would be briefed by the Eastern Command officials on the measures taken to bring the situation under control.

In light of reports of renewed violence in the state, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles have significantly enhanced security measures throughout Manipur to ensure the safety of the region.

The Army reported that the security teams in Imphal East and Churchandpur successfully averted firing incidents between two communities, during which armed miscreants opened fire and fled towards higher areas. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and ongoing operations are being conducted to maintain security in the region.

There have been violent communal clashes in Manipur due to the Manipur high court directing the State to pursue a 10-year-old recommendation to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the non-tribal Meitei community.

Ethnic violence has plagued Manipur, resulting in the loss of approximately 60 lives, as disclosed by chief minister N Biren Singh earlier this month. The turmoil has further led to the burning of houses, and new incidents continue to be reported from various parts of the state.
