hyderabad: congress leader y s rajasekhara reddy on sunday came down heavily on leaders of the ruling telugu desam party, alleging that they have been using police power to threaten congress activists. citing an instance, he criticised the superintendent of police, p s r anjaneyulu for beating up three congress workers of yemmiganuru constituency - ramakant reddy, nagi reddy and somasekhar reddy - without any provocation.
they were beaten up only because they were actively participating in electioneering, he alleged. rajasekhara reddy said that a congress party delegation would present instances of such police high-handedness to director-general of police h j dora and state election commissioner k madhava rao. he would then follow this up with petitions in the high court. reddy reiterated his demand for free power for the farm sector, saying that since farmers of the state were in distress, they needed to be supplied free power. he, however, parried a question about the statement of chief minister chandrababu naidu about the possibility of congress-ruled states such as karnataka and madhya pradesh implementing such a proposal. he said the farmers of those states need not be given free power, but in ap, where about 285 farmers had committed suicides, there was every reason for such a move. district congress committee president kotla suryaprakash reddy, party leaders d vishnuvardhan reddy, b g yellaiah, s raghurami reddy, m sudhakar babu and others were present at the press meet.
