Young movie buffs have a treat at film fete, learn through workshops

HYDERABAD: On the first Sunday of the International

Children's Film Festival of India

(ICFFI), scores of children trooped into cinema halls across the city to watch movies in regional and foreign languages.

Open forum discussions were also held right alongside the movie screenings and workshops on film-making, storytelling and animation.

According to those present at the main venue of the film festival, which is currently in its 20th year, animated movies are particularly of interest to children.

"Children, today, are far clever when it comes to visual communication and many are extremely creative. It is important that these budding film-makers are guided in the right direction. A great movie can even be shot by a child using a mobile phone, provided they are given proper guidance," said Ashok Kaul, a film-maker who organised a workshop for children on making a film within one hour. Kaul is credited with having made the first live animation film in India in 2005.

Dhvani Desai

, meanwhile, taught children about the basics of animation and the history and evolution of animation in India, during her workshop.

"Today animated films are made on a variety of subjects and are also used to create more awareness on certain social issues. Animation movies can be 3D films, medical films, biographies or educational films. However, the story is the soul of an animated film," she told a room packed with children.

Meanwhile, makers of the Telugu-language short film,

Indeevaram

, which narrates the tale of an orphan, said how producers need to have a sense of social responsibility.

"Film producers, particularly those making children's films, have a social responsibility. They must ensure that these movies send out a strong message, not just to children but their parents also," said
