HYDERABAD: An attention diversion gang struck at Sultan Bazaar and stole seven-tola gold ornaments from an apparel shop owner on Monday afternoon.
On Monday afternoon, two persons went to the shop of Kousalya at Sultan Bazaar and purchased towels worth Rs 400. During the purchase, they told Kousalya that they would be starting a jewellery store in the neighbourhood soon and gave her a 500 rupees note.
After she returned them Rs 100 change, one of the fraudsters asked Kousalya to place the gold jewellery she was wearing in the Rs 500 note and pray for good fortune.
When Kousalya placed the gold bangles and chain in the Rs 500 note and closed her eyes to pray, the conmen escaped with the Rs 500 note and the jewellery, Sultan Bazar ACP R Giridhar said.
Based on a complaint by Kousalya, police registered a case. Police checked the CCTV footage of various shops near the crime scene and Kousalya could identify the two offenders at two other locations. Police suspect that the offenders were involved in several such similar offences and have launched a manhunt to nab them.
