Residents alleged that RTA officials are collecting ?35 as postal fee for issuing key documents such as no objection certificate, driving license clearance certificate and international driving permit.

“RTA is collecting ?35 as postal charges, but the same documents are being delivered by evening. Why should the RTA collect postal charges if the documents are being collected by 4pm in the evening on the same day? Where is this money going? We need to know whether all this money that we pay is going to the government, postal department or RTA? There should be a CBI enquiry in this matter,” said M Dayanand, a resident of Tarnaka.

They urged the officials to either send the documents home or stop collecting the postal charges. “The fee for most of these documents include application fee, service charge, smart card fee and postal charges. Delivering key documents through speed post was made mandatory by the government in 2008 to ensure that no fake addresses are used and this needs to be implemented strictly,” said U Yadagiri, a resident and general secretary, Shakthi Auto and Goods Drivers’ Union.

Accepting that the postal charges are being collected for documents that are being given to the applicants by hand on the same day, RTA administrative officer

B Prasad Rao

, said, “It is true that for some services the postal charges are being collected. Since this is a state-wide problem, I will take this issue to the notice of our head office and we will correct the policy.”
