Thirty scientists and activists have now written o the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) on environment clearance to withdraw the terms of reference (ToR) citing hazardous waste that would be discharged into Krishna. Wadapally is located at the confluence of Krishna and Musi.

KGPUL intends to set up a plant with a production capacity of 12,000 tons per annum (TPA) of sodium saccharin and its byproducts. The byproducts include sodium dichromate (50,000 TPA), basic chromium sulphate (1,00,000 TPA) and white sodium sulphate (15,000 TPA).

The activists have said that the hazardous byproducts would pollute surrounding villages as well as the two rivers.

“After coming to know more about this project, we are concerned that the ToR was issued in haste based on deceptive information,” said Dr K Babu Rao, former scientist at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology.

“We appeal to the EAC to protect Krishna river and the people,” Babu Rao said.
