hyderabad: the fledgling telangana rashtra smithi (trs), fighting for separate state, on thursday added one more zilla parishad (zp) to its kitty when it captured karimnagar with tacit support of five bjp members, who have since been suspended from the party, while congress bagged chittoor zp. the zp polls for the two districts were earlier postponed twice for want of quorum amid high drama and allegations of horse-trading.
the trs, floated barely three months ago by former deputy speaker k chandrasekhar rao, has already won nizamabad zp after storming telangana districts in an impressive electoral debut and bagging 84 zilla parishad territorial constituencies (zptcs), which constitute electoral college for zp polls. with thursday's elections, the poll process has been completed in all the 22 districts, of which tdp has won 12, followed by congress 8 and trs 2. in karimnagar, where trs had emerged as the single largest party with 22 zptc members out of total of 56, five bjp members and one congress member attended the meeting on thursday to elect the chairman and vice-chairman, thereby providing the required quorum. following this, the trs nominees k rajeshwar rao and m sudhir kumar have been declared elected for posts of chairman and vice-chairman respectively. meanwhile, congress, overcoming internal bickerings, got its act together to gain control over chittoor, the home district of chief minister n chandrababu naidu.
