Along with two other commandos, Suman and Satya Krishna, Nayeem was on sentry duty at the house of Anurag Sharma behind the AP police headquarters in Lakdikapul.
At 3 am, Nayeem relieved his colleagues from duty and took position. He was supposed to be on guard till 5 am. At 4.45 am, the other two commandos, who were in the rest room, which is about 50 meters away from the sentry post, heard a gun shot and rushed to the spot.
The commandos found Nayeem lying unconscious with a bullet wound on his chest. The commissioner was alerted about the incident and Nayeem was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Saifabad inspector Umender said that one round was fired from the AK 47 rifle of Nayeem. “The bullet pierced through the left side of his chest and the wooden roof of the sentry post,” the inspector said.
The body was sent to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem. Police said Nayeem’s engagement was to take place on Sunday (April 22) and his marriage was scheduled for May 21.
Stating that Nayeem had no reason to commit suicide, his brother Raheem, also a constable with the APSP VIII battalion in Kondapur, told police that the commando had neither a love affair nor any family problems. Commissioner Anurag Sharma described the incident as very unfortunate and said they would analyse the victim’s cellphone call details to get some leads on possible reasons that might have led to the incident. “Nayeem’s colleagues said he looked mentally disturbed since the past two days. The incident was a very tragic one and the analysis of call details might provide some useful clues,” the commissioner said. The Saifabad police have booked a case under section 174 (Suspicious death) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
