HYDERABAD: After onion prices moved consumers to tears, it is now the turn of tomatoes to crush any hope of a fall in prices.Tomatoes, which are already selling for up to Rs 15 per kg in the open market, will become dearer as supplies from Madanapalle in Chittoor district have dwindled. If this continues, the prices of tomatoes may double soon.Apart from Madanapalle, the city gets it’s supplies from Ranga Reddy district.
But the quantity is not much.
The recent heavy rains led to the destruction of the tomato crop in Madanapalle and Ranga Reddy. In the last 15 days, the tomato supplies from both Madanapalle and Ranga Reddy district have dwindled. As the prices of tomatoes are soaring in the open market, it is being sold from Rs 6 per kg to Rs 10 per kg in the 101 rythu bazaars across the state.AP State Marketing chief executive officer, P Venkateswarlu told ‘TOI’ that in the rythu bazars in Hyderabad, tomatoes were being sold at Rs 10 per kg.The prices of other vegetables like potato, carrot, cabbage, green chillies, French beans and leafy vegetables including palak and corundum leaves will also go up in the next few days. This is also because of the damage to the crop due to incessant rains. As of now, in the open market, the price of potato is Rs 14 per kg but some vendors are also selling it for Rs 20. Marketing authorities said due to their intervention, it was being sold between Rs 12 and 14 per kg.The remaining vegetables including carrot, brinjal, bhindi, green chillies, bitter gourd, cauliflower, cabbage, carrot and donda are also being sold between Rs 10 and Rs 12 kg in the open market.
