Thousands take Bathini’s fish prasadam on first day in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Around a lakh people suffering from respiratory diseases, including asthma, took the traditional fish prasadam at Exhibition Grounds in Nampally on Saturday, according to the Bathini family.

Thousands of patients, on an empty stomach, stood in serpentine queues to receive the popular Bathini concoction from 3am itself. “We administered fish prasadam to around a lakh asthma patients on day 1, Saturday, and are expecting another lakh on Sunday,” Bathini Gowri Shankar Goud told STOI.

“The fish prasadam will be distributed up to 11am on Sunday and then we will continue it at our ancestral house in Doodbowli,” Gowri Shankar added.

Traffic congestion around Grounds for 2 hours

Earlier, transport and BC welfare Ponnam Prabhakar took the prasadam to kickstart the event at Exhibition Grounds. A serpentine queue was seen up to Gandhi Bhavan Metro station on the road. As a result, traffic congestion was noticed between 8am and 10am.

Fisheries stock over 1 lakh murrel fishlings

Fisheries department opened 16 counters and started issuing tokens to the patients to get murrel fingerling from 8am onwards. According to assistant director, fisheries department, Shanker Rathod, tokens would be distributed till 11am on June 9. “We have stocked 1.5 lakh murrel fishlings for the event,” the official added.

HMWSSB officials distributed five lakh water sachets by setting up water camps at Exhibition Grounds. “We supplied Manjira water to keep the fishlings alive as the murrel canno survive in bore water. Uninterrupted tanker supply is being provided to the two-day event,” HMWSSB chief general manager and water supply management in-charge of the fish medicine event M Prabhu told STOI.

Police officials made elaborate arrangements by deploying a police force for the two-day event.

Two lakh patients expected this year: Family

In anticipation of rain, pandals were also set up at the ground for the patients.

“Every year, we administer fish prasadam to more than a lakh asthma patients. We have been administering fish prasadam for over 175 years, the patients trust us,” a member of the Bathini family told STOI. This year, we are expecting two lakh patients, he added. According to the family, patients who have taken fish prasadam can follow a diet of old rice, wheat, sugar and so on for 45 days.
