NEW DELHI: Flyers heading to Hyderabad got an unwelcome surprise on Friday as heavy rainfall forced three IndiGo flights from Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune to be diverted to Vijayawada, raising concerns over worsening weather in the city.
As per news agency ANI, officials at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) confirmed that the diversions were a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety amid intense downpours.
The same relentless rain has wreaked havoc on the ground.
Mithila Nagar colony in Meerpet Municipal Corporation in Rangareddy district, was waterlogged, leaving residents stranded and forcing traffic to a standstill.
The deluge comes after a series of unusually heavy showers this southwest monsoon, with Telangana recording a 25% excess rainfall—89cm against the normal 71cm.
Hyderabad alone has seen a 51% rise, with 91cm of rain compared to the usual 60cm.
Chief minister A Revanth Reddy has called for heightened vigilance, directing officials to monitor flood-prone areas, relocate residents from low-lying regions to relief camps, and ensure uninterrupted power supply despite the weather.
Teams from GHMC, HYDRAA, NDRF, and SDRF have been placed on standby to respond to emergencies. Citizens are being urged to stay indoors and avoid traveling on waterlogged streets.
