HYDERABAD: After keeping its cards close to the chest, the Telangana government, on Thursday, appointed 1990 batch IPS officer Anjani Kumar the director general of police (DGP).

Incumbent DGP M Mahendar Reddy is scheduled to retire on December 31.

Several IPS officers, including the existing Hyderabad police commissioner CV Anand, were in fray, as the successor for Reddy.

Till a year ago, Anjani Kumar had a long stint as Hyderabad police commissioner and handled several key events successfully.

Presently, he is DG (Anti Corruption Bureau). He has held several important posts such as additional director general of police (Law & Order), additional commissioner of police (Law and Order), IG (Warangal), DIG (Counter-Intelligence Cell) and others.

In its order, the state government appointed Anjani Kumar as DGP (Coordination) with full additional charge of DGP (Head of Police Force).

"Anjani Kumar, IPS (1990), firector general, anti-corruption bureau, Telangana is transferred and posted as director general of police (Coordination), Telangana and placed in full additional charge of the post of director general of police (HoPF), Telangana state in place of M Mahendar Reddy, IPS, who is retiring from service on superannuation on 31.12.2022," the government order said.

Along with appointing a new DGP to the state, the government also did a minor reshuffle in several key IPS postings.

Hyderabad additional commissioner of police (Law & Order) DS Chauhan is transferred and posted as Rachakonda commissioner of police replacing the incumbent Mahesh Bhagwat, who will be ADG (Crime Investigation Department).

Sanjay Kumar Jain, who has been in ADG (Provisions and Logistics) for a long time, will be holding the key new ADG (Law and Order) post, replacing Jitender, who is appointed as Principal Secretary (Home).

Ravi Gupta, the existing principal secretary (Home), will be the DG (ACB).

He is also given additional posting of DG (Vigilance and Enforcement).
