Telangana: 40% vote share, all that’s needed to form next govt

HYDERABAD: With changing election scenarios and swinging polling percentages, parties are hopeful that with 40% vote share they will be able to form the next government in Telangana. This is contrary to the scenario in 2014 elections with about 34% vote share BRS had secured the magic figure.

BJP and Congress are hoping to improve their voting percentage from Lok Sabha elections, while the Bharat Rashtra Samithi is hoping that even a minor dent may give them that 40% edge.

In the 2018 elections, BRS had bagged 47% vote share and Congress 29%, BJP secured 6.98 %, complicating the scenario for Congress.

BRS vote share is equal to the cumulative of all parties in the state in the last assembly election. BJP’s better performance in the subsequent by-elections and GHMC polls and the saffron party keeping up the momentum might determine the winner. Congress hopes that if it could increase its vote share by another 18% it might win the elections independently.

In the 2014 elections, TRS had bagged 63 seats, while in 2018, when chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had called for early elections, the pink party won 88 seats.

In the 2018 elections, Congress, Telangana Telugu Desam Party (TTDP), Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and Communist Party of India (CPI) had formed an alliance to contest the elections and won 22 seats. Two independents won, while BJP was confined to one seat.

However, in the subsequent Lok Sabha elections a few months later, TRS vote share dropped to 41.29 %. It further came down to 35.77 % in the GHMC elections. But the party still has better voting share than the 2014 elections.

However, it is BJP whose voting share saw massive jump from just 6.98 % in the assembly elections to 28.43%. Congress vote share also improved slightly from 29% in the assembly elections to 29.48%. The grand old party also witnessed poor voting share in GHMC polls, 6.64 %.

Election Commission notices to Congress, BRS for cusswords

Notices served on Congress and BRS for use of cusswords during Telangana election campaign. TPCC president allegedly said CM should be beheaded. Congress accused BRS of calling them Scamgress and their manifesto 420 manifesto. CEO Vikas Raj served the notices in nine cases. Replies will be forwarded to ECI for further action.
