Telangana couple donate Rs 1 crore land to panchayat in son's memory

HYDERABAD: At a time when the knives are out between siblings or father and son or mother and daughter over claiming ownership on a small piece of land and families are wrecked over land disputes, a farmer couple from Karimnagar district displayed a rare generosity by giving away a portion of their 3.18 acre property to the local gram panchayat in memory of their youngest son who died in an accident 20 years ago.Nunugonda Lakshmaiah and Ramavva handed over the ownership documents of the land - measuring 1.06 acre - to Uppala Anjaniprasad, president of the state sarpanches association, last week with their two elder sons in tow. The deceased son, Prabhakar's share of 1.06 acre from the 3.18 acres is currently valued at Rs 1 crore in the market. The family hails from Nunugondapalli in Goliramayyapalli village in Ramadugu mandal."We want the land to be used for the benefit of local people and the village," Mallaiah, the eldest of the three brothers, told reporters. Showing gratitude to the family, the villagers erected a bust of Prabhakar on the donated land.We assured the family that the land would be used in the best interest of the village,” a village elder said.Prabhakar was 27 when he met with an accident in 2004 and died. His parents wanted to pledge his eyes, but their wish could not materialise. They expressed happiness that the land that would have belonged to their son will serve a bigger purpose and benefit the village.Villagers of Nunugondapalli felicitated Lakshmaiah and Ramavva, thanking them for their generosity.
