WARANGAL: As many as 50 girl students of Urugonda village were forced to part with their brand new bicycles they had received from the government under the Soukaryam scheme and had walk to and from their school on Thursday.
The blue bicycles were commandeered by TDP leaders and activists, including zilla parishad chairman A Baswa Reddy, on Wednesday who rode the bicycles in the TDP''s Janda Panduga programme.
Baswa Reddy is said to be an aspirant for the TDP ticket from Shayampet Assembly constituency in which Urugonda falls.
Orders went out on Wednesday evening in Urugonda to all homes where schoolgirls had received bicycles from the government recently. "There were enough bicycles in Urugonda. It is not as if there is a shortage of bicycles," a resident said. Parents of the girls who got the bicycles from the government were ordered to hand over them to ensure success of Janda Panduga.
While TDP leaders from the village said the girls handed over the bicycles to them voluntarily, many girls told The Times of India they were forced to take their bicycles and park them in the houses of TDP leaders and activists on Wednesday night.
