Telangana sweats it out as March hotter than usual; mercury level hits 43° Celsius

HYDERABAD: Telangana saw a hotter March this year with recording above normal maximum temperatures by 1-2 degrees on an average, as compared to March last year, according to India Meteorological Department officials.

With maximum temperatures in the state crossing 42 degree Celsius on Thursday, north Telangana has seen two degrees rise and south Telangana recorded one degree rise in temperatures this year, with orange alerts being issued early on.

“Usually maximum temperatures are up to 38-39 but this year it’s going up to 40 degrees, due to warm dry winds from north already arriving into the state,” said A Sravani, scientist C, IMD Hyderabad.

According to Telangana State Development Planning Society, the highest temperature on Thursday (March 28) is 43.1 degree Celsius at Nirmal as compared to March 28 last year when highest recorded temperature was 41.6 degrees.

Temp crosses 40 in 32 dists

Furthermore, on March 28 last year, only six districts recorded temperatures above 40 degrees. However, this year, 32 districts recorded temperatures above 40.

However, observations show that temperatures in central and east Telangana are slightly below normal. “This is due to the flow of easterlies and southerlies which bring in moist air to keep temperatures slightly lower. In the coming week however this trend will be gone as northern winds will blow over central Telangana as well and due to this temperatures are going to rise further,” added Sravani.

Hospitals on vigil

Meanwhile, owing to widespread heat conditions, city hospitals are on vigil, to tackle heat-related ailments. However, tertiary centres like Gandhi hospital and Osmania are yet to see any cases.

“We have kept sufficient stocks of IV and other medication. We are expecting cases to surge soon due to heat. Patients are advised to seek help at nearest health centres,” said Dr Shankar, superintendent of Fever Hospital

Calls for early

summer break

Parents have sought an early summer break for schools which are scheduled to close only from April 24. “Why are they letting school function till April? The Telangana education department should urgently revise the planned schedule as the temperatures are extremely hot for students even in half day schools,” said Saima Khan, a parent.
