HYDERABAD: At a time when unemployment and job notification issues are being debated in the state, a look at the country’s unemployment rate has revealed that
Telangana is one of six large states with an overall unemployment rate of 7 per cent before the pandemic hit the economy hard.
According to a data submitted by the Centre in Parliament recently, the periodic labour force (PLF) had shown that joblessness rate in the country in 2019-20 in rural areas was 3.9 per cent, 6.9 per cent in urban areas and 4.8 per cent overall for people aged 15 and above. Telangana had a rural unemployment rate of 5.2 per cent, a city unemployment rate of 10.2 per cent and an overall unemployment rate of 7 per cent among people aged 15 and up. The only states with an overall unemployment rate of more than 7 per cent were Kerala (10 per cent), Delhi (8.6 per cent),
Assam (7.9 per cent),
Punjab (7.3 per cent) and Uttarakhand (7.1 per cent).
Surprisingly, the unemployment rate in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh was 4.7 per cent during the same period. As expected, the urban employment rate was higher than rural unemployment in all the states.
However, according to the central government’s quarterly employment survey, the unemployment rate in the state reached 25 per cent in the first few months of 2020-21 but quickly fell back to 10 per cent in the following months. According to state government sources, current employment levels are normal and will almost certainly improve later this year when Covid-19 is expected to provide significant relief and the economy will begin to pick up speed.
Meanwhile, Union minister of state for labour and employment Rameshwar Teli told Rajya Sabha in a written reply that the Union government has no proposal for mandatory enrolment of graduates at employment exchanges across the country. It is entirely voluntary to register at any of the country’s employment exchanges in order to receive employment-related services, he said.
