Students burn effigy at University of Hyderabad on land issue

Hyderabad: Tensions escalated at the University of Hyderabad as students staged a protest and burned an effigy condemning the Telangana govt for allegedly misleading the assembly on the UoH land issue.

The demonstration, organised by the UoH students union, was aimed at denouncing the alleged remarks made by CM Revanth Reddy and IT minister D Sridhar Babu against the students.

The students demanded an immediate halt to the proposed land auction and called for the registration of university land in the institution's name. They also insisted on a public apology from Revanth and Sridhar Babu for their reported remarks.

"Several students were beaten up by police. Disturbingly, female students also alleged incidents of molestation during the crackdown," claimed J Bishnu, a student union representative.

Police intervene

Upon learning about the protest, police arrived at the university to ensure the demonstration remained within campus premises. "Around 45 students attempted to stage a protest outside the university, but we did not allow them," a senior Cyberabad police official told TOI. The protest ended at 9.30 pm. Police denied allegations that a large force was deployed, as claimed by the protesters.
