Student safety first: Hyderabad Police push for drones, CCTV and split school hours; aim to ease traffic around city schools

HYDERABAD: The city traffic police are mulling the use of drone surveillance to manage traffic near schools where traffic congestion is high.

Joint commissioner of police (traffic) Joel Davis said that it is the responsibility of the school managements to regulate traffic at their respective premises. “We advise schools to deploy their own security staff for traffic regulation. We caution against overloading school vehicles and urge parents to also take accountability instead of leaving everything to the police. There is a need to raise the awareness amongst students about traffic signals and staggering school hours for primary and high schools to help reduce traffic congestion,” said Davis.

At the event, commissioner of police CV Anand said that school managements would be held liable for safety lapses within 200 m of their premises.

Police also warned that strict action would be taken if minors are found driving vehicles. They also said that vehicle registration would be cancelled if a minor is allowed to drive a vehicle. Officials so far have cancelled 766 vehicle registrations.

Police advised schools to ensure maximum CCTV surveillance at their premises in order to ensure safety of students.
