HYDERABAD: Six people were held by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence sleuths at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad on Saturday. They seized Rs 1.76 crore worth watches and a valuable camera lens.
Additional director general C Rajan said Khaja Kamaldeen, Mohammed Azarudeen, Mohammed Sameer, Syed Hayat, Nishad Ahmed and Chand Basha Niyamathullah, all from Chennai, landed at the RGIA from Singapore by a Silk Air flight (No MI 478) on the night of August 25.
"They were carrying several bags and customs officials found 5,000 watches and a Canon lens without proper documentation. During the interrogation, they confessed that they were diverting the goods to Chennai via Hyderabad by evading customs duty," Rajan said.
Based on the information given by them, surveillance was kept on two more persons, Abdul Naheem Sheik Ismail and Syed Rahamatullah, who arrived by an Air India flight to receive them. A case under provisions of the Customs Act 1962 was registered against them.
