hyderabad: the speakers at the seminar on "awareness of cancer in women with particular reference to breast and cervical cancers and menopause and osteoporosis," organised here recently, said that better awareness about cancer was necessary for its effective control. the institute of genetics director prof p p reddy, inaugurating the meet, said there was a need for dispelling the misconceptions about the cancer.
according to the director, many think that cancer means death. "effective treatment systems like chemotherapy and radiotherapy are available for cancer treatment. if the disease is detected in its early stage, it can be healed. the patients should be given proper support and it is necessary to boost the morale of the patients," reddy said. according to the institute director, many cancers are familial. there was an urgent need to identify markers, bio chemical or cytogenic, to take necessary precautions and facilitate early detection. convener of the seminar p usha rani asked the patients to do necessary exercises regularly and stick to dietary restrictions. she exhorted the funding agencies to extend support to research for creating a cancer vaccine. a scientific session was also held as part of the seminar, where the clinical genetics head of the department dr m sujatha chaired the session, a press release said.
