HYDERABAD: Robbers struck at a house of a prominent business family at Langer Houz, killing an elderly woman and a young girl, and looted Rs 20 lakh worth jewellery and cash in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The victims — Jayavanthi Sahu, 70, bore two stab injuries on her face, while 14-year-old Ankita Sahu, was attacked with a blunt weapon on the back of her head.
The family, which noticed the incident around 5.30 am, took Ankita to the Apollo Hospital, where she was declared dead on admission. On return, one of the family members alerted the police control room about the murders.
Based on the information provided by the victim’s family, the police surmise that the incident could have taken place between 2 am and 4 am.
Jayavanti and Ankita were sleeping in the front portion of the house, while grills of the main door was not locked.
Though the Sahu family was rearing two Alsatian dogs, they did not bark and neither of the 12 other members of the family,who were sleeping upstairs heard any noise during the night.
The robbers apparently scaled the wall from the backside of the building, which houses the Pratap theatre, also owned by the family, and even had curd rice in the house.
Sahu’s family owns a jewellery shop, which was located in the front portion of the building, the Nava Bharat petrol station, which is adjacent to the house, and many other properties in the Lunger Houz and Golconda areas.
The police received clues to show that the robbers even entered the canteen in the theatre, consumed a full bottle of the PeterScot whisky.
One of the family members, Om Narayana Sahu, Ankita’s father, was awake till 2 am and watched a film.
According to Asifnagar assistant commissioner of police N Srinivas, the robbers possibly watched the movements of the inmates and entered the house after Narayana went to sleep.
“The silence of dogs during the commissioning of offence indicates that someone very close to the family was possibly involved in the crime,� he said.
