Residents urge govt to rework road widening plan for skyway

Secunderabad: Commercial and residential property owners in Cantonment are urging the state govt to rework the plan to widen the Secunderabad Club-Trimulgherry road to 200ft. However, they have welcomed the plan for an 11-km long elevated skyway between Gymkhana Grounds and Hakimpet Airforce Station.Many owners said the widening will affect businesses and age-old properties. Businessman V Amarnath said a more practical approach would be to widen the road to 100ft-110ft, including space for footpaths. “Many roads in the city are effectively managed for traffic load even though they are only 100-ft wide,” he said.Before commencing the works on the elevated skyway, residents and property owners are urging the govt to take their consent by issuing a public notice.K Subramanyam, a 90-year-old resident of Vikrampuri Colony in Karkhana, has a property, which was built over five decades ago. It was demarcated by SCB and defence officials. “Numerous properties will be razed against the owners’ wishes,” he told said. Claiming that a majority of property owners belong to middle class families and pay taxes to the Cantonment Board promptly, he said: “We welcome the six-lane elevated skyway but, at the same time, want the govt to pay us compensation before launching demolition works.”
