vijayawada: repolling in four polling booths in krishna district passed off peacefully on monday barring a minor incident of protest by former minister paladugu venkata rao at bandarugudem village. villagers did not come out to vote till 2 pm as about 300 protesters led by paladugu venkata rao staged a demonstration in front of polling booths no 26 and 27 seeking payment of an ex gratia amount to the family of ganta mohan raju (30) who died under mysterious circumstances on sunday.
a rasta-roko was also staged for over two hours at veeravalli centre demanding arrest of those allegedly responsible for the death of raju. his body was not allowed to be taken to the eluru government hospital for postmortem. mohan raju, a supporter of an independent candidate, died under mysterious circumstances on sunday. while his relatives alleged that he was murdered by the rivals, the td and congress leaders contended that he died of excessive drinking as he was a habitual boozer. district collector b r meena ordered a detailed investigation into the incident even as the police registered a case under sections 332, 380, 427, 324, 302, 307, 448, etc. the guilty are yet to be identified, police sources said. district superintendent of police sandeep sandilya and additional sp ravi verma rushed to the village to bring the situation under control. based on the assurance given by the sp that the guilty would be brought to book, the protesters called off the agitation following which the polling began at 2 pm. the body of raju was then shifted to the eluru government hospital for postmortem. meanwhile, repoll in newgondapalli village under agiripalli mandal and gandepudi in nandivada mandal, however, went on smoothly amidst tight security. incidents like snatching of ballot boxes and tearing of ballot papers on sunday forced a repoll in these villages.
