Sources from the department of heritage and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said that UNESCO members will raise doubts which they may have over the monument’s nomination at the meeting. Without confirming the visit, Dinakar Babu, director, heritage, said any meeting with UNESCO officials would only be to submit clarifications.

A source from the ASI said, “The date has been tentatively set for November 22. UNESCO officials will try to ensure that there are no discrepancies between the version presented by the independent expert who had visited the temple and the case presented by local officials.”

International Council on Monuments and Sites

(ICOMOS) expert Vasu Poshyanandana had inspected the heritage structure in September. The three-member team will include director of state archaeology, Pappa Rao and Suryanarayana Reddy, who have been instrumental in the dossier creation process. ASI officials from Delhi will be sitting in on the meeting via Skype.

Several clarifications have been sought, including who will manage the

Ramappa

temple. To this, the state has clarified that a monitoring committee is in the process of being set up and would include the collector, local politicians, officials from the department of archaeology and ASI officials.
