rajahmundry: congress corporators in the rajahmundry municipal corporation (rmc) demanded the government to request the nagpur-based national environmental engineering research institute (neeri) to conduct an inquiry into alleged pollution by the andhra pradesh paper mills (app mills). the congress corporators on saturday visited the lagoons of the river godavari at venkatanagaram, 13 km from rajahmundry, into which the paper mills was releasing its wastes.
congress chief whip in the rmc council v gangadhara rao told reporters at venkatanagaram that the management has been lying to both the people and the corporation that it was not polluting the river water. he said the management had failed to take even minimum precautionary measures while releasing its waste into the river. he said the present system of purification was not effective. gangadhara rao said the state government, despite being a major shareholder in the mills, failed to address the problem.
