HYDERABAD: Huge chunks of government land have fallen into the possession of land sharks and encroachers but mandal revenue officers (MROs) seem to be little interested in recovering the land. Over 20 acres of government land in Bandlaguda mandal and six acres of prime land in Saidabad mandal have fallen into the hands of squatters. According to sources, large tracts are under illegal occupation in all the 16 mandals in the city. Despite clear court orders in favour of the government, mandal revenue officers (MROs) are not taking possession of the land in several cases.
A recent inquiry by the administration revealed that there are dozens of sites which were ruled in favour of the government.
But MROs are not getting down to retrieving them. Illegal buildings have come up on such land, sources said. None of the MROs is ready to show records of the missing land. When the administration sought details of the land records recently, the revenue officials of Saidabad were not able to produce them. Similarly, Bandlaguda revenue officials were given time to produce records of 20 acres gobbled up by squatters. But there was no show.
In many cases, officials in most of the mandals in the city are not even in a position to throw light on the present status of land under their jurisdiction. This has prompted Hyderabad collector Arvind Kumar to order an inquiry into irregularities in the mandal revenue offices of Saidabad and Bandlaguda. "It's surprising that the MROs are not able to pinpoint the possession of government land. The responsibility of protecting government land lies with the MRO. If government land falls into the hands of private parties, the MRO concerned must take the blame and face punishment accordingly,"Arvind Kumar said.
