Secunderabad: Come April and private agencies will collect garbage from the doorstep in Secunderabad Cantonment. After implementing door-to-door garbage collection system through private groups in SCB ward no-I (Bowenpally) on an experimental basis, authorities have now decided to extend the services to the remaining seven SCB wards.
“Our motto behind this concept is to make Secunderabad Cantonment free from garbage and achieve the top rank in Swacch Survekshan ranking this year,” an official said.

Initially, officials faced a lot of resistance from the garbage workers who were daily wagers and were against the newly-launched solid waste management project.
Authorities made certain modifications to ensure that garbage collection does not face hurdles. “Tenders have been invited to procure 15 swachh auto tippers in each SCB ward to handle the garbage collection system,” SCB deputy CEO, Vijaykumar Balan Nair, told TOI. Tenders will be finalised by the end of this month, he added.
All the garbage bins across the Cantonment have been removed and these vehicles and manpower will be deputed to lift the domestic waste from every household. The collection of domestic waste will start at 6 am and continue up to 9 am.
The sanitation wing officials also said that the private management will collect a fee, which was initiated in February in Cantonment, from the households. An amount of 100 from every household in residential colonies and 50 from every house in the slums/bastis has been fixed as fee.
