Police stop BRS ex-MLA’s son from leaving country
Hyderabad: The Jubilee Hills police have stopped Mohammed Raheel Aamir, son of former BRS MLA Mohammed Shakeel, from leaving for Dubai as he remains under investigation in a 2022 fatal hit-and-run case registered at Jubilee Hills.Police said Raheel, who returned from Dubai two weeks ago and surrendered before Jubilee Hills police after securing anticipatory bail from the High Court, had booked a ticket to travel abroad on Thursday. Acting on information received through informants, officers contacted him and told him he did not have permission to leave the country. A Jubilee Hills police official said Raheel was informed that the Look Out Circular (LoC) issued against him in the case was still in force and that the High Court had only permitted him to enter India to surrender before investigators. He later appeared at the Jubilee Hills police station on Friday, where officers again explained that he could not travel overseas while the investigation was continuing. Police said he would have been stopped at the airport because of the active LoC.‘Infant killed'The case relates to an accident on March 17, 2022, on Road No 45 in Jubilee Hills. Police allege that an SUV driven by Raheel hit Kajal, a balloon seller. Kajal was injured, while her two-and-a-half-month-old son died after being thrown onto the road in the impact.
Investigators said Raheel fled the scene after the crash. Two others in the vehicle, identified as Syed Afnan Ahmed, a BBA student, and Maaz Moheet Khan, also allegedly fled, leaving the SUV behind. Initially, Afnan claimed he had been driving the vehicle, and police booked him in the case. The probe took a fresh turn in December 2023 after a separate incident in which a BMW allegedly driven by Raheel crashed into a barricade near Praja Bhavan. During that inquiry, police suspected that Raheel had again tried to have another person take responsibility. CCTV footage later identified him as the driver, resulting in a case being registered and the suspension of the Punjagutta inspector for dereliction of duty.Following those developments, West Zone police reopened the 2022 accident case. Though a chargesheet had been filed against Afnan, investigators obtained court permission for further inquiry, re-examined Afnan and Maaz, and named Raheel as an accused in 2024.
