Police investigating IVF clinics in and around Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Police officials are investigating IVF and surrogacy fertility centres in and around Gopalapuram, as well as other parts of Hyderabad.

“There might be 100 such couples, many of whom we believe are unaware of the law banning commercial surrogacy, and might be approaching similar clinics. We are now checking whether there are other fertility centres performing such illegal practices,” DCP Perumal told TOI.

She added that only altruistic surrogacies, which involve family members and no financial transactions, are allowed, and that too only at established centres.

Officials revealed that there are 158 such centres: 27 assisted reproductive technology centres, 27 ART-level 1 centres, 72 ART-level 2 centres, and 32 surrogacy centres.
