for cheating a woman after promising to marry her. Based on the victim’s complaint, a rape case was registered against the accused in February and a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued.

Immigration sleuths took the accused into custody when he arrived from Dubai at the city’s RGI Airport on Thursday, and handed him over to Malkajgiri police. The accused,

Safdar Abbas Zaidi

, is a software professional from Darulshifa in the Old City.

In February 2018, the 26-year-old victim, who was a colleague of Zaidi, lodged a complaint with Malkajgiri police alleging that the accused promised to marry her but after living in for about three years in Dubai, went back on his promise.

The victim and Zaidi initially worked together in a software firm in

Somajiguda

. Later, Zaidi went to Dubai for work in 2014 and the victim followed him. The victim told the police that both their families agreed to the marriage and she even converted to Islam to marry him. “However, due to certain restrictions imposed by Zaidi on the victim, she returned to India early in 2018. When Zaidi refused to marry her, she lodged a complaint with us and a case was registered under sections 376 (rape), 417 and 420 (cheating) of the IPC,” Malkajgiri police inspector A Manmohan said.

As Zaidi was in Dubai when the case was registered, police had issued a LOC against him. “We produced him before the court and he was sent in judicial remand,” the inspector said.
