No BJP woman candidate ever won assembly poll in Telangana, but 1,000 seek party ticket

Hyderabad: While the women’s reservation bill for 33% quota in legislatures has been introduced in Parliament by the BJP-led NDA government, the saffron party itself has never had a woman MLA or MLC in either combined AP or in Telangana. But that appears to be no deterrent to women leaders and workers in the party who account for nearly 1,000 of the total 6,002 applications for tickets to the assembly polls, according to party sources. From Mahila Morcha and district leaders to booth workers, women have enthusiastically participated in the party exercise to seek a ticket, a senior leader said. Among the women leaders looking to contest are DK Aruna (national vice president), spokesperson Rani Rudrama, Bangaru Shruthi (SC/ST Morcha), corporator Akula Srivani (GHMC spokesperson), actresses Jeevitha Rajasekhar and Karate Kalyani. Among these some have filed applications and some have not. Haryana governor Bandaru Dattatreya’s daughter B Vijayalakshmi has announced that she wants to contest from Musheerabad which was earlier represented by Rajya Sabha MP K Laxman, a former state BJP chief and now president of party’s OBC Morcha. Huzurabad MLA Eatala Rajender’s wife also might be in the race for a Huzurabad ticket, sources said. Dubbing the bill, ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ as a big step towards women’s empowerment, Laxman said, “In the last nearly 10 years, the BJP-led government has taken many measures for social welfare. This bill is historic and all parties should support it,” he said.

Denied assembly ticket, BJP's 'ghayal sherni' quits party

Former BJP MLA from Chachoura, Mamta Meena, has resigned from the party and is expected to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). She expressed her anger towards the BJP leadership after they announced the first list of candidates. Mamta plans to contest the election from Chachoura on an AAP ticket. This is the third resignation from the BJP in two days. Mamta Meena had previously won the Chachoura seat in 2013 but lost in the 2018 assembly elections.
