HYDERABAD: Two housewives, including a newly-married, allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents in the city since Saturday. 20-year-old K Sravanthi was married to Balesh two years ago. Sravanthi's father Anand reportedly gave Rs 50,000 as dowry at the time of the marriage of his daughter. The couple were residing at Pattuluru village in Shamirpet mandal on the outskirts of the city.
Police said Balesh, a daily wage earner, was reportedly harassing Sravanthi to get an additional Rs 20,000 as dowry. Unable to bear the harassment meted out to her, Sravanthi set herself ablaze on Saturday night.
The woman died on Sunday while undergoing treatment for the injuries, police said. In another incident, an 18-year-old housewife committed suicide in the city. V Sri Lakshmi (18) was married to Bhaskar, a resident of Heera Nagar, Gudimalkapur in March 2006. Two months after the marriage, Bhaskar left to Srikakulam and did not return to his wife. Sri Lakshmi was living with her parents, who also reside in the same locality, since her husband left for Srikakulam. Depressed over her husband not coming back since he left to Srikakulam, Sri Lakshmi committed suicide by hanging herself at the house on Saturday night, police said.
