An HIV/Aids testing centre will be set up in the Assembly from December 18-20.
HYDERABAD: Looks like it is time for politicians to practice what they preach. In tandem with the state government's 'Be Bold' campaign against HIV/Aids encouraging people to get tested and know their status, an HIV/Aids testing centre will be set up in the Assembly from December 18-20. The testing centre will be open throughout the day as long as the assembly sessions last and will conduct HIV tests on MLAs who 'voluntarily' approach them for it.
"With AP clocking the highest number of HIV/Aids patients in the country, the 'Be Bold' campaign launched on World Aids Day on December 1, this year seeks to address the stigma related to the disease urging people to 'voluntarily' test themselves. This will at least prevent further spread of the disease and help victims change their lifestyle accordingly,"said G Ashok Kumar, project director, AP State Aids Control Society (APSACS). The centre will conduct HIV Whole Blood tests which will spell the results in a span of 10 minutes. If an MLA is tested negative, he will be informed immediately.
But in case the result is positive, it will be run through two more confirmatory tests, the results of which will be given the next day. Apart from a laboratory technician to conduct the test, there will also be a counsellor who will provide basic information on the virus, its various modes of transmission, precautions and other lifestyle modalities. "Prior to the test, one will be pre-counselled about HIV/ Aids. A consent form will also have to be filled up, declaring that he (patient) is voluntarily undergoing the test and the result will be kept confidential,"said Dr M V Ramana Rao, joint director, blood safety, APSACS.
There are around 500 HIV testing centres across the state including voluntary and prevention of parent to child (PPTC) testing centres. Here there are three rapid tests that are conducted to confirm the virus — Combaids test, EIA Comb test and Tridot test. In case the first test proves positive, then the two other confirmatory tests are conducted and the final result declared on the following day along with some counselling for added measure.
