HYDERABAD: A local court issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against senior Congress leader
Digvijaya Singh in connection with a defamation case filed against him by SA Hussain Anwar, joint secretary of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), in 2016.
The VIII additional chief metropolitan magistrate had directed Digvijaya Singh to appear before the court in Nampally on Friday.
When he did not appear, the court issued the non-bailable warrant against him, complainant’s counsel Mohammed Asif Amjad said.
SA Hussain Anwar filed the defamation case against Digvijaya Singh and an Urdu daily before the metropolitan magistrate court, alleging that Digvijaya Singh, while answering a question at a press meet in Hyderabad if All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen would enter the Tamil Nadu election fray, had said that “Asaduddin Owaisi, president of AIMIM, would contest only in elections from places where there were financial benefits.”
The complainant further alleged that the statement of Digvijaya Singh was published by the Urdu daily. As the statement was defamatory and hurt the sentiments of AIMIM followers, he sent legal notices to Digvijaya Singh and the Urdu daily management. A representative of the Urdu daily sought more time, citing a marriage in the family. The court directed him to appear on January 3.
