HYDERABAD: More men have committed suicide than women this year, according to data provided by city crime records bureau. Of the total 402 suicide cases registered this year till September, 265 were men.
In 307 cases this year, people resorted to hanging to commit suicide. Among them 204 were men. In total 39 men committed suicide by consuming poison while 16 women died of consuming poison.
“It is hard to say what the reasons are, but we have observed that in most of suicide cases the reasons men take their lives because of work pressure or financial problems,“ said Avinash Mohanthy , DCP , CCS.
Psychologists say that men are more emotionally suppressed than women, which sometimes trigger suicidal tendencies among them. “Though we have noticed that women are more prone to depression, men often do not express their emotions, which can trigger suicidal tendencies. It is often hard to identify such cases among men,“ said Dr Pragya Rashmi, a city-based psychologist.
Psychologists say the rate of adolescent suicide is also rising alarmingly in the state, as people fail to reach out for help when they are suffering from depression.
Data provided by police also reveals that 137 women had committed suicide in the city this year, of which 15 women took the extreme step by burning themselves and 16 women died after consuming poison.
“In most cases, women committed suicide due to family dispute,“ said Mohanthy . Psychologist Rashmi said women suffer in strained relationships or family disputes. This if more often than not the reason for them to resport to the extreme step.
